
Following the death of Nasser, he continued to be vocal, and say bluntly what he believes in. In 1976 he wrote;

Later in his life he got even more disillusioned with the state of affairs, this climaxed with his most cruel anti-establishment poem, in which he said;

Death was not far away... In the early 1980s Amal suffered from a long painful illness that led to his death. He spent a long time in hospital, particularly room number eight, where he wrote some of his best poetry. His last collection of poems were published under the title "Room number eight"..Here is one of his poems;

These few pages are in the memory of Amal Donkoul. This great Egyptian poet, who in my mind is one of the best that Egypt produced this century.
