



I first got to know about Amal Donkoul as a teenager in the 1970's. A friend of mine found a poem by him in the Kuwaiti magazine AlArabi. We were quiet moved by the poem, but we knew nothing about the poet. Because of the name we thought it was a woman, and we were not sure about his nationality..
A year later while studying with the same group of friends, at one of our friends home (we happened to be in his older brother room) and we found in his bookcase a collection of poems by Amal Donkoul. This was a great opportunity for us to satisfy our curiosity regarding this illusive poet. We were totally stunned by his poem "Spartakus last words". this was written in 1962, it is a cry for freedom in Nasser's Egypt(and a mockery to the 99.99% Yes vote). It starts as is usual with Amal's poetry with a" punch in the face" :
